Since Halloween is all about masks and disguises, what better time of the year to talk about shedding the masks we create to hide our true selves from others. Many of us are honest with others but not always honest with ourselves, or how we represent ourselves to other people. Being true to ourselves and being true to others about who we really are is what real relationships are all about, and the only way to have a strong, long-lasting truly intimate connection with someone. Use these pumpkins to express what is not always easy to say. When a family member is sad or happy because of something another family member did, write their name, a few details on the back and display the pumpkins on a family bulletin board. At the end of the week, count how many happy and sad faces there are. Discuss how important it is to let someone know when you are hurt or disappointed and encourage them to express it in a kind, respectful way. Emotionally happy families have more positive interactions than negative ones. Start fresh for week 2 and make it your family goal to attain more happy faces.
